FUN FACTS ABOUT BRAHMS' PIANO CONCERTO No. 2

At our upcoming concert, Yuja Wang will be performing Brahms' Majestic Piano Concerto No. 2 Here are some fun facts about the piece!

1. Brahms, in a letter to a friend, sarcastically called the piece a "tiny, tiny piano concerto with a tiny, tiny wisp of a scherzo." In fact, the piece is huge in terms of both length and variety.

2. This is the second and last piano concerto that Brahms ever wrote; his first was written 22 years earlier.

3. The premier of this piece was the beginning of Brahms' friendship with Hans von Bülow, who later famously said that the three Bs of music are Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms.

4. The concerto is dedicated to Brahms' childhood piano teacher, who encouraged Brahms to improvise and compose.

FUN FACTS ABOUT PROKOFIEV'S PIANO CONCERTO No. 5

At our upcoming concert, Yuja Wang will be performing Prokofiev's astonishing and virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 5. Here are some fun facts about the piece!

1. The concerto was originally titled simply "Music for Piano and Orchestra"; however as the piece became more and more complex, Prokofiev decided to make it a full concerto.

2. While most piano concertos are composed of three movements, this one has five.

3. The angular melodies of this concerto were dismissed at the time of its premier as being meaninglessly complicated. Prokofiev however, says he was trying to create a "new simplicity" within the work and that "my music would in time prove to be quite simple when the ear grew accustomed to the new melodies."
