"Blake S. is a very special friend of mine. I have been fortunate to know him all of his life. When Blake was three-and-a-half years old, I brought him to the Santa Cruz Symphony's Family Concert. Blake had no idea what he was about to experience, but was mesmerized by the robust live performance. After the concert, I took Blake through the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo." He hungrily tried all the instruments he'd watched in amazement during the performance.

"Since that event, Blake has exclaimed, out of the blue, "Julie, we need to go to the Symphony!"It touched my heart. What an honor to plant this seed with Blake. I have since taken him to an Open Rehearsal - a great opportunity for him to see and hear the orchestra. How fortunate Blake and the Santa Cruz community are to have our wonderful Symphony. So many generous people have contributed to our ability to enjoy this musical treasure."

What better way to get kids excited about music than by seeing the instruments first-hand? Following the Family Concert, the children in the audience are invited to take part in an Instrument Petting Zoo. Kids will get a chance to talk to the musicians about their instruments, hear what each one sounds like, and even try a few out themselves!

The Petting Zoo is a fan favorite, and being able to get to know the instruments personally is always exciting and inspiring to our younger audience. We hope to see you there!

The fourth part of our Music in Schools Video series is an introduction to what it means to be a part of the audience at a live symphony concert. The video is meant for young concertgoers, and features information about concert etiquette and the role of the audience in a live setting.

The Santa Cruz Symphony Music In Schools video series is a component of the educational offerings we provide as part of our annual free Youth Concerts for 4th and 5th graders throughout Santa Cruz County.
