Musician Spotlight - Marian Concus

Marian Concus holds a degree in flute performance from the New England Conservatory and studied in Paris under Michel Debost, who has been described as the successor to Jean-Pierre Rampal as the leading flutist of his generation.

Originally from Berkeley, Marian lived in Paris, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia before returning to the Bay Area. She is currently a member of both the Santa Cruz and Fremont Symphony Orchestras.

As a teacher, Marian directs the Flute Choir and coaches the symphonic band flute section at Bellarmine College Preparatory School in San Jose. She also has taught at Oshmann Jewish Community Center School for the Performing Arts in Palo Alto and at Branham High School in San Jose.

Marian is also accomplished on the piccolo. When asked which she prefers, she said, “I really like both of these very different instruments. The flute is luscious; and the piccolo is unique. Even though the piccolo is a woodwind, sometimes it sounds like it belongs in the brass section of the orchestra, or with the percussion.  Composers use these diverse qualities of the piccolo sound to write some delightfully quirky repertoire for the instrument.” But if she had to, “I’d choose the piccolo because I could put it in my pocket.”

Outside of music, Marian enjoys hiking and cooking. After seeing the eclipse this August, she quipped, “an eclipse chasing hobby sounds really fun.”
